Although the syllabus remains pretty much unchanged, from from January 2014 the VHF operator’s licence or Short Range Certificate (SRC) was brought in line with European legislation. Candidates will now be examined by an independent assesor who is paid by the RYA directly, not by the RYA Training Centre. There will be a number of options available from completing the base course on-line via the 5 Star RYA Interactive web site, to a combination of home study and then classroom tuition, or a complete classroom course which will be over 2 days. Details of the options are detailed further down this article. You can view the taster session in the video.
The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to operate marine VHF radio and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. This includes both fixed and hand held equipment using International channels.
