RYA Motor Cruising Courses

The RYA Motor Cruising scheme is recognised as one of the best schemes in the world. At 5 Star we pride ourselves on being able to offer our clients a high standard of tuition together with a fun and enjoyable experience. We like to call it ” the 5 Star Experience”!

The RYA Motor Cruising Scheme has been structured to offer practical boat handling training from the beginner to the more accomplished. You can enter the motor cruising programme at any point according to you knowledge and experience. Be careful not to overestimate your capabilities and it would be better for you to contact us and discuss your experience and aspirations.

No matter your motivation for doing an RYA course, be it for pure enjoyment of learning to handle a motor cruiser to ensure the safety of your family and friends or if you are looking to work in the marine industry we aim to make your stay with us enjoyable and fun.

We are probably unique in offering a choice of boats for you to learn on. A planning sports boat with twin stern drives or a 40 foot flybridge shaft drive motor cruiser. Plus, of course, we can teach you on your own boat.

Why do we offer this choice? Simple really, because not everybody buys the same type of boat, so by offering a choice we believe we can provide for the needs of the client. Additionally, we have clients who are looking to charter boats abroad where the International Certificate of Competence - ICC - is required and a lot of the boats available are on stern drives. By completing the 3 day ICC on the type of boat you are most likely to be helming gives greater confidence, particularly if you are going boating for the first time.

To ensure maximum learning time, we limit the number of students on all our courses to 3. This does not apply if doing the course on your own boat, but we would advocate following our lead.

Our course costs include fuel and lunch as well as all waterproofs and safety equipment. We tend to return to our home berth each evening, however if students wish to experience a night away this can be accommodated with the overnight berthing fee split between the students. Most requests can be accommodated, so if you want to do something a bit different just discuss it with us.
